On the top right corner of my screen, I have a sticky note that says, “And then aliens came down.” Why? Because sometimes, when I’m writing, and I discover that the story isn’t working, I get stuck. I end up trapped by thinking a certain thing has to happen to make the story work. It’s a weird form of tunnel vision. That’s when I look up and see my reminder. Anything can happen. It’s my story, and if I want aliens to arrive suddenly, I can make that happen. If I decide my hero wants to chuck it all in and go live in a hut in the middle of nowhere, I can do that too. Nothing is written in stone. It’s a friendly reminder about life also. Anything can and will happen. Who thought we would be spending a year mostly in a quarantine state because of a virus? And yet, here we are. So just remember, when you’re writing or doing anything really, and feeling stuck, you have the power to change it. And then aliens came down…
